At Makersquare every student gives a presentation. I happened to be the first presenter and was quite thrilled to research a security topic. There wasn’t much time to plan a full presentation- I basically had a Sunday (or only downtime) to refine a topic, assemble and practice the speech.
Luckily for me, I’ve been quite experienced with public speaking. Which in itself was terrifying, but I kept striving at the goal of being comfortable speaking in front of groups. At one point I had memorized four ninety minute speeches for a Napa Valley Winery I was employed at. Speaking publicly gets easier the more you practice, and just like learning a new skill you’ll find your stride. Therefore, I felt relatively comfortable with the idea of speaking in front of the student body.
What I did not know, was what topic to write about. I’m very interested in Security in general: the spread of malware, fraud, and best practices to keep your computer from being compromised, as well as things like shell scripting, or optimizing your workflow with plugins and keyboard shortcuts. It took more time to decide what to speak about than writing the material.
